Maurice Imhoff

Maurice Imhoff is a Michigan historian, author, public speaker, and historic preservation advocate dedicated to uncovering and preserving overlooked stories of American history. Specializing in Michigan’s African American Civil War regiments, particularly the 102nd United States Colored Troops, his research highlights the experiences, sacrifices, and contributions of African American soldiers whose stories have often been overlooked. An accomplished lecturer and public historian, Imhoff has delivered presentations to audiences across the nation at historic sites, museums, libraries, historical societies, universities, and other cultural and educational institutions. His presentations explore the Civil War, African American military history, historic preservation, and the importance of documenting underrepresented histories, connecting local stories with broader national events.

In recognition of his contributions to historical preservation, education, and community engagement, Imhoff has received the Jackson 30 and Under Award and various recognitions from the Michigan State Legislature. His commitment to public history extends beyond research and speaking engagements, having previously served as chairman of the City of Jackson Historic District Commission, co-founded the Jackson County Michigan Historical Society in 2020, and completed an internship with the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. Through his continued writing, lectures, and preservation initiatives, Imhoff remains dedicated to making history accessible and ensuring that overlooked voices and significant chapters of the American experience are preserved and shared with future generations.

Reader Reviews

“Mr. Imhoff knows the value of remembering history and honoring those heroic aspects of our past. The men in this regiment fought bravely for our country in numerous historic engagements throughout the terrible American Civil War. By recognizing their service, we honor the best features of our American history and those individuals who chose to act.”

“Scholars of the Civil War at any level will find Imhoff’s work an illuminating look at Black soldiers’ experiences and commitment to the cause.”

Greyson Bettendorf, Department of History, University of South Carolina

"A great book for any local Jackson resident or Jackson lover. I was very fun to learn the history of this local gem that is still one of the crown jewels of our downtown. The Michigan Theatre has a rich and interesting history that is told in this book. It was remarkable to learn how multiple groups in many generations fought to save this amazing place from destruction. I particularly loved the old photos and ads included in this book."
